Vernon Emil Martin, Jr. was born on December 15, 1929 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Oklahoma, and a Master of Science in library science from Columbia University in 1965. Martin worked at Columbia University and New York Public Library before joining the faculty of North Texas State University as music librarian from 1966 until 1970.
